The "Immortal" Ikarians: An otherwise quiet island, Ikaria, belongs to those few places on earth, along with Sardinia, Okinawa and Costa Rica, where people have unusually long life spans. The people who inhabit those so-called Blue Zones usually share common lifestyles: they are active, eat wisely, have solid social relationships and a strong sense of purpose in life. A recent study conducted by the National Hellenic Research Foundation discovered 10 times more 90-year-old brothers and sisters in Ikaria than the European average. Nearly one out of three Ikarians make it to their 90s. They have about 20% lower rates of cancer and 50% lower rates of heart disease and virtually no dementia, studies reveal. Obviously, Ikarians are not young only at heart.
